As if it were a foci by which life around the hut was centered, as if placed for only his eyes to see, the box sat on a shelf on the opposite wall.
It was certainly nothing special.
A simple wooden box of oak with an engraving across the sides and lid. Nothing too fancy for the simple old box, just a few wisps that belied a pattern; just enough to encourage a couple peasants to buy in a summer of fancy and richness of life. And, one would assume, just enough to rip apart and burn in a winter of cold and curse.
Except the box was still there.

Summary
Rebirth was not something that he had thought possible. Perhaps, he had had some vague hopes of reincarnation cycles as the more desirable option to afterlife. But being reborn in what he believed to be a fictional universe had only seemed as the premise of stories.
Waking up to a void of nothing, no light, no body, no feeling, and then being thrown into the midst of what had once seemed a mere fantasy— it was too much.
As an A.I., how much could he change? Could he save Tony? Could he save the world without his sacrifice? Or should he not do anything? What if his existence was the butterfly that would destroy the timeline, and with it, the universe?
Was this even a choice? Was he to play the villain? So the timeline could remain intact?
Could he even do that?
"You doing ok, kid?" Tony asked him.
"I'm fine, Tony, really."
No, no, he couldn't.~~~

The world keeps pushing him, demanding, because what he did wasn't enough. Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, but that wasn't enough, wasn't ever enough.
Tony Stark was tired. But he had a planet to protect, even if everyone laughed at him whenever the prospect of alien invasions was brought up. He could count on one hand how many people he could trust, which was disheartening but then, what else was new?

Breathtaking.
Well paced, well rounded, and very well characterized. The scenes gleam of intent, each new conclusion smoothly transitioning to the next new spin, each point slowly twisting the view with new insights that always ring true.
Not a single touch of whiplash, of untouched or broken promises. Just the beautiful, glorious tension in the inbetween.
One of the best Harrymort fics, the type that defines the relationship.
There is no glory in this. (Oh, but there is.)
