Summary
He and Ian are content. He has a husband he’s loved for half his life. They live in a home they built together. He has a business he is good at, that brings in more money than they knew what to do with, and is able to employ his family to help them out as best he can. Ian has recently returned to working as an EMT, finally feeling more fulfilled in a career than he has in years. He has a beer with Ig every Thursday, a phone call with Mandy every Saturday morning, dinner with Yev every Wednesday and a weekend with him twice a month, and the most perfect daughter in the entire world. He can’t possibly imagine wanting anything else. A dog, maybe.
That is, until this morning when the doorbell rings.

“And what do you want to be when you grow up?”
“A hockey player!” Shane says immediately with a shout, jumping off the front step entirely. The smile on his face could light a ship’s way home.

"So, an inside date?"
"Yes. I googled."
"You googled?" Shane sounds skeptical, even though Ilya knows that Shane knows how much Ilya loves a good google search.
"Yes. I searched 'HELP how to plan romantic Valentine's Day with secret arch rival hockey player boyfriend when we can't leave his home and also he is very boring.'"
"You did not."
"Okay," Ilya admits, kissing the curve of Shane's shoulder, "That was not my exact search."
Or: Valentine's Day 2018, in an apartment somewhere in Montreal.

Summary
"I am asked, often and rudely, if me earning a spot on Team Canada is taking a spot from a real Canadian. I always say, very clearly and honestly, that I do not know what that means. Being Canadian, to me, is an extraordinary, peaceful miracle: A blend of Tim Horton’s coffee and pond hockey and cottage summers and looking good in a toque. It is truly valuing diversity and the freedom to be yourself, to love where you come from — and to also love your neighbor. To care for them, and to be a kind person, above all else. I cannot think of another place in the world that can balance community with individuality.
I lost my home at twenty-six, and found one in a nice Montreal boy’s earnest brown eyes and a cottage by a quiet lake in Quebec and a team of underdogs in Ottawa. I cannot think of anywhere in the world that means more to me. I cannot think of an identity that resonates more than being Canadian. I did not feel like I belonged anywhere, to anyone, until I came to Canada. I remember what not having Canada feels like. I am so proud to belong to Canada."
