It had been only yesterday that Revy had seen Balalaika as something inhuman, an unyielding steel butcher programmed to march, shoot, and detonate. Even in her fantasies, she was painfully aware of it. In that moment, however, the gunslinger saw her for what she truly was: an aging wolf on her final hunt with no discernible end, the remnants of a once-mighty pack trailing behind her like scraps of newspaper on the wind.
She could dress in suits of vicuña wool, and roll diamonds across her knuckles while dotting the I’s of her signature upon 100,000-dollar contracts, but the rot and blood that clung to her could never be sold for the decadence she pursued.

Tatiana feared— hoped— for a moment, that Balalaika might start to undress her, and have her right there on the desk like there was no dispute between them. What was worse was that the auditor didn’t think she would have the resolve to stop it from happening if she did; it seemed that, whenever she was around the old captain, all rationality left her, what brain cells remained guiding her directly into the embrace of a woman who could and probably would crush her without a moment’s warning.
How typical it was that she should be the mouse who fell for the mousetrap twice.
