Mello took a moment to register the smell slowly reaching his nostrils as the elevator's small size concentrated it around him and Halle once the doors slid closed. Mello took a deep breath through his nose, realising it came from Lidner’s clothes. He turned to her, her alarmed expression giving her away as she realised that Mello had put two and two together. Mello's mind went, in exactly four seconds, from being reminded of Matt's cigarette smell to understanding that the bitch's face could only mean one thing.
The air was knocked out of her lungs when Mello threw her violently against the cubicle's wall.
“WHERE IS HE?” Mello snarled, twisting her arm and making her cry in pain.
Halle knew better than to deny. But that didn't mean she would give in so easily. “He doesn't want to see you.”

Near entertains the lie, keeping Matt working for him with the belief that Mello died after abducting Takada. Mello, a shadow of himself, thinks that Matt died that same day, shot multiple times. A drunken decision and Mello suddenly takes revenge on Near just to numb the pain... and finds Matt in a condition he didn't expect.

Mello did not need glasses.
He did not.
It wasn’t his fault that factories used such tiny lettering on their packaging materials these days, or that Matt’s handwriting was practically illegible. He had a right to be angry about that without getting accused of needing glasses, okay?
The eye drops he sometimes needed to take were bad enough already. As if having a such a prominent scar on his face wasn’t enough of a pain, his damaged skin and lack of lashes caused his eye to get irritated every so often, especially if he’d been staring at screens for too long.
Putting in lenses would probably only irritate his eyes even more, so it was a good thing Mello needed neither lenses nor glasses, thanks very much.
For some reason, Matt was convinced otherwise.
The traitor.
