Howl turned to her, shooting her one of those hideous smiles that had once broken the hearts of hundreds of innocent women and to which Sophie had promised herself she would never give in. This time, she found that she almost succeeded.

The gossips would walk around the outskirts of the city, telling their tales like a plague, and then stop at their place, trying on this or that bright hat. Usually their stories were so silly that Sophie learned to ignore them: they seemed to be jealous of other people's happiness and gloating over other people's pain.
