Summary
My problem (or rather, the complete lack thereof) was not that over the years he had taken several significant steps, as a magician, to equalise our relationship. It was not his perpetually clumsy manner of joking, nor did it have anything to do with his futile attempts at indistinct apologies and forced expressions of gratitude. It was not his crooked smiles, which for some reason always twitched at the left corner of his lips, nor even in his habit of falling asleep well after midnight, his head bowed on the surface of the wooden table, that wooden table on which he worked until his fingers were covered with small bruises where he held his ballpoint pen.
It was that instead of looking at him, as only the worst traitor of their kind would do, I rather looked through him. There was something fundamentally strange about the mere existence of the human body. The concept was so distant from me, buried deep in the indistinguishable connections of bones and tangled pathways of neurons, that it became harder for me to understand when it became so close to me.
Or
The concept of looking at someone you once shared a body with from an outside perspective can feel rather strange.

Summary
"Does it hurt?"
As if in slow motion in an old film, she watched Bartimaeus stop, turning to her with the clearest emotion of unfiltered perplexity that she knew not only in a human being, but in anyone.
His body froze in the middle of an unfinished step, his eyebrows raised slightly, his lips pressed into a thin line. Kitty had forgotten that Bartimaeus didn't need to blink — he had only done so to imitate something human, something far from his own nature. He lost such small details very quickly, but rarely for long. Unless he wanted to scare her, and something intuitive told her that this was not the case.
"What?" The voice with which he uttered this did not seem angry, shocked, or sad to her. In fact, it sounded like complete and utter emptiness, and if Kitty didn't know him better, she would already be taming the goosebumps on her skin.
"Your side," she explained, stopping at the top of the stairs. "Does it hurt?"
Or
Kitty is lost in search for freedom in a world that doesn't allow it, the thing Bartimaeus is really familiar with.

Summary
Now Nathaniel was down on his knees, his legs battered with phantom bruises, incapable of moving his fingers. His palms, clasped tightly together like a rosary, fought the urge to press against the wound somewhere deep in his side to dull the pain. His lips were covered with a thin layer of cold, and his own name spread warmly across his tongue. He knew he had never had any other choice.

Summary
On the days when her palms were covered with caustic calluses and her head hung unbearably heavy on her shoulders, Asmira had to think of her mother. One of her earliest memories, covered in a thin layer of fog, fragments scattered in all directions: her own feet, bare and stained from the hot earth, with grains of sand scattered between her toes, soaking her deep in each of their thousand pieces. Her mother walked in front of her, untouched by their chaotic movement, as if the sands were a paved path, a patch of clear sky. Several knives were tucked into her belt, low enough to grab with one swift movement of her hand, yet high enough that she could not reach them. Different shapes, materials and sizes, they glistened in the bright morning sun, and in her possession they looked quite innocent, not unlike tame wild snakes.

Summary
I tilted my head, and the reflection repeated my movement in synchronous unison, not a moment behind. Something inside me clenched, tied in an unpleasant, tight knot somewhere in my stomach, and then sent a deceptive tingle across my skin. I went forward, a step or two closer, looking at the unnatural fade of the colours, the pervasive absence of any shades. The complete dominance of painful, all-absorbing order in every tiny detail, down to the symmetry of the threads of the shaggy fabric, the even prints on my fingertips.

Summary

Summary
In which Bartimaeus is a little shit with a goal to ruin Nathaniel’s plans and Nathaniel almost gets an aneurysm trying to accomplish them. Hold your beers because none will be drunk in this instalment, but they sure will be present.
Canon divergence in that the PG’s ending never happened, but Bart will still be forever traumatised by that frog incident.

Summary
Sophie had no hope of keeping up with Michael as he chased the star, even with her seven-league boot. He was a flail of limbs and a sploshy sound of madly running feet ahead of her, as the falling star streaked white down the sky. At the speed it had been going it should have hissed into the pools like a doused match long before he reached it, but now it slowed, as though it was moving through honey. She wrestled with her foot, stuck in the seven-league boot, as Michael stalked the star, a paper cutout against its stark white light.
“What is it? What do you want?” she could hear it shrill, bobbling nervously.
“I only want to catch you,” Michael explained. “I won’t hurt you.”
“Get off, you stubborn thing,” Sophie muttered to the boot, and at last wrenched her foot free. She set off stumping toward Michael. The star stared at the boy with frantic, flickering blue eyes.
“I could save you if you’d let me catch you,” Michael told it. His voice grew softer as he edged closer. “I know magic. Please—” he said, and then with one quick, darting motion, he closed his hands around it like a child catching a firefly.(in which michael is told to catch a falling star, and so he does.)

Summary
- Set around somewhere in the book version in which the gang runs the flower shop! - Before moving house, Howl specifically made sure to ask Sophie what kind of house she would like to live in, and made sure to deliver on her answers. Of course, a lovely house with wonderful flowers would be a perfectly peaceful place for lowering Sophie's resting heart rate! But even knowing that Sophie is mostly safe and likely out of trouble at the castle, Howl can't help but feel something gnawing at him, and it's not his growing concerns regarding the Witch of the Waste. It will take a heart to heart with his own heart to find his answers this time.
