Hollander’s eyes were wide, full of surprise as he couldn’t believe they were in the same place. Ilya knew the feeling. He was going to be sick. Outside of playing against each other on the ice this was the closest they’d been in three years. Nothing but chairs, tables, a scattering of memories, and a couple of tuna melts between them. The corner of Shane’s mouth tipped upwards in a smile. Ilya felt something twisting his gut. The delicious grape leaves turning sour in his stomach. Svet laid a hand gently on his own and he turned his attention back to her that concerned look had grown and matured into something quickly approaching sympathy. He looked back at Hollander and found his attempt at a smile gone. He looked sad and a bit lost. Was Shane on a date? The man was seated too close to Shane to be casual.
Or Shane leaves Ilya's home in 2016 and never returns. A few years later they see each other at a restaurant while Shane is on a date.
