‘The Filthy Oar,’ was not, as the name would suggest a rowing boat. It was rather, a well-appointed sea going sailing boat that Isabela had commandeered.
Among the well-stocked with malachite-inked maps the cramped navigator’s deck had a beautiful mother-of-pearl compass set into the table with which to australise oneself. The thought crossed Isabela’s mind, at least twice a day, if she could pry it out without damaging it too much.
She did however, take the majestic, broad-rimmed and befeathered captain’s hat she found in a cubby under the berth. It was extravagant enough to make an Antivan blush. If it begged the question, did the previous owner of ‘the Filthy Oar’ have considerably more money than sense? Then the answer was so obvious that it rather made the thief of the ship a net moral good.

“Only four people took one tonight, and I’m sure that Margarit only took one to be polite since I bandaged up her nephew last week.” Anders complained without bothering for a greeting.
“Well, that’s two more than last month. Here,” she announced, slipping her hand from the warm bubble she’d created and darting through the chilled air she plucked up one of the pamphlets. She snapped the paper straight and focused pointedly on the swimming black ink, the little words that screamed of major rebellion. Then she folded it in half and slid it into the pocket of her leggings. “Now the count is five tonight.”

Anders was left alone with a printing press, and now Merrill is drowning in pamphlets.

“I wanted to ask-“ Merrill’s voice cracked just a little, her words sounding scratchy. She didn’t like to ask for help, didn’t often need to.
“No.” Anders interrupted, giving her a once over and then elbowing past her into his clinic. “Whatever errand you want to run, I’m busy. Can you see I have more patients than I know what to do with?” He pushed through the curtain and let it fall behind him.
But she caught the rough, ragged cotton of the curtain. Merrill thought it would be rude to glance around the quiet, empty room, so she didn’t take her eyes off him. She sucked her lower lip beneath her teeth, and lothe as she was to admit it, she confessed. “I just need some help.”

Merrill is going to fix her mirror at any cost, blood, lies, tears, she’ll trade it all. But now Anders has got swept up in the quest to fix the mirror and he wants no part of this… unless Merrill can make a deal sweet enough to pique his interest?
