Sometimes, they’d rest together in the quiet between the setting sun and rising moon. Sometimes they were silent, words hanging in the crisp rainforest air, sometimes they were loud, expressive like the pelting raindrops above the canopy. They could be laughing or crying, but he was happy either way. As long as it was her.
The phenomenon of death playing any role near the ruler of things that thrived and grew. She was so alive. So alive. A target, survivor, and a heartbeat he almost wanted to tear away and cradle, simply for the sheer proof of the beauty of her lively existence. No. He dragged his mind back from the edges where love kissed hate. She was just full of life. That’s how normal dragons phrased it.

The royal gardens were practically silent.
Everything was quiet, from the mute trickling of the usually peaceful river that intersected the large park, to the hushed, bright blue-and-orange tropical birds that flitted nervously in the shaded tree canopy overhead. In the mid-day humidity, it felt as if everything was holding its breath, waiting for Queen Glory’s final verdict.

Thunderclan, Firestar once told him, uses a heavy crown made out of gold. They could have made it lighter, and chose not to, because they wanted every king and queen who wore it to remember that leadership is a burden, not a glory. (Firestar says, Firestar says; his thoughts always seem to circle around to Firestar, when he lets them. He doesn’t let himself think seriously that perhaps Mudclaw had a point, but the “perhaps” is there.)
Firestar fought a duel to the death for his crown, watched a queen go mad under the crown. Onestar takes the crown of Windclan in his hands — it’s a light, unobtrusive thing, made out of polished wood and enamel, meant to not be too obvious a badge, so that the king would remember that he was still part of his people.
The king is still a part of his people, Onestar thinks, and tosses Tallstar’s crown — his crown, now — from one hand to the other and back again. Perhaps he’ll be ripped in two. Wouldn’t that be fitting.
