At first, Mike was unsure how to approach him when he got like this. But they’ve been living together for months now, never further than five feet apart in their dorm beds, so Mike’s learned what works and what doesn’t.
It works when he wakes Will like this, with gentle hands and words, telling him he’s safe. It works when he climbs into Will’s warm bed, turning him on his side and curling up against his back, an arm over his waist and his cheek pressed against his shoulder. They lie together like that until Will’s hiccupping gasps soften into steady breaths, until Mike feels him go limp in his arms and he knows he’s fallen back asleep. It always works.
or: Will has nightmares and Mike is the only one who can console him. Not even Will's boyfriend can. Mike takes great pride in this fact.

That was, for the most part, anyways.
There were little moments here and there, where the air shifted, and their little game of telepathy faded out into blistering confusion. Their comfortable silence would swell into a thick, budding tension that Mike could feel from the top of his scalp to the tips of his toes. Sometimes it was the brushing of a hand, or an accidental kick of the feet underneath the lunch table, or lingering eye contact in moments shared alone. Silent conversations exchanged between quiet glances, questions floating through the air around them, energy thrumming between them, hot like a live-wire to the touch. It was almost like a game. Tether the edge close enough, and eventually one of them will snap.

Will smiles encouragingly at him, swiping his tears away and kissing his forehead again. "Let's make a deal, okay?" he murmurs, voice low and full of a bittersweet sort of hope. "If in five years we're both doing better, and we're not dating anyone else-" Mike blanches at the concept of dating anyone else, of Will dating anyone else- "we can try again, okay?"
Five years sounds like a terribly long time. In five years, Mike will be twenty-three. He'll be done with college, will have a career, could be living anywhere in the world for all he knows, and the same goes for Will.
But five years is a whole lot less than forever, so Mike will take it.
In the summer of 1989, Mike and Will fall apart. Five years later, they fall back together.
