“COI,” Simon growled, bringing one knee up and shifting his weight, struggling to remember how to stand. The ground bucked beneath him, sending him onto all fours, the impact jarring every nerve. “Not done feeding me to it, keep chewing and spitting.”
He gagged on his next words, choking back a sob. “'M’not a person, am I? Just a machine to you. Patch me up, send me in again..." Every muscle seized in a violent, cramping tremor. His breath shook. Cold sank into his bones while his skin seared hot.
“I don’t know who this COI is,” Grace said evenly. A cough. A few deep, wheezing breaths. “Wow, you really did a number on me.”
“Rocky explain,” the alien said firmly, tapping Grace’s knee not too gently before turning back to Simon. “You in danger. You hurt. We hear distress call through wormhole. We help.”

Simon is at the brink of death, the eel about to consume the ship. the black box in his arm. One moment he's drowning at the bottom of the blood ocean, the next he is in a spaceship with a talking rock and a science teacher. Grace was alone on his ship, but now he has the chance for a do over, a new face, a living breathing person, not from earth. Grace and rocky were on their way back to erid, when they got a faint signal from a blood moon, two living creatures deep below.
Grace needs to cure Simon of his radiation far before he could ever explain the truth about the stars. Why they can't return to earth, and keep rocky from driving Simon insane.

"Now that Simon isn’t unconscious, bedridden, nor tripping over his own feet, he feels useless. Ryland and Rocky are giving him everything he needs to keep him alive, even studying his body in the hopes of figuring out what the hell happened to him, how he got here, how he’s alive. Meanwhile, Simon is sitting around. Useless. Feeling guilty. Like he owes Ryland somehow."
OR: Simon feels guilty for "taking up room" on the Hail Mary on the way to Erid, so he asks Grace how he can help out on the ship in an attempt to make himself feel better. Grace and Rocky remind him that not only does he deserve to be there, but that they're very happy to have him.
