This will make so much more sense if you read that firstPete never said he liked the week-on, week-off relationship he had with his son. His son, even three and a half years later, it still blew his mind that he was a father. He’d sworn he’d never have kids, because he knew he’d be an unstable wreck half of the time and on tour the other half, but so far, everything had worked out okay, hadn’t been insanely fucked up, and that came as a surprise to all parties involved, except Bronx. The little devil had complete faith in his fathers; he was sure that Pete and Patrick held all the answers to the universe when really, they just held a phone equipped with the power of Google. And damn it, he loved the kid, almost more than he loved Patrick if that was possible, even though he was just a little brat who coloured on Hemmingway and made siren noises during Reno 911.

Jet Star told me that Dr. Death Defying had ran the radio station for as long as he could remember, and when he returned to the Phoenix Witch, Show Pony and I ran it. That was after the Killjoys were exterminated by the dracs, naturally, and I had been on my own for a few years by then. Nineteen year old motorbabies don’t usually survive the zones alone, but I was never alone. I had Show Pony, I had the wind and the sand and the Joshua trees. You were never alone, if you really looked.

Father Stump heard almost nothing but those seven words every day, and then different versions of the same sins over and over. “Yes, child. Tell me your sins.” He recited almost robotically, sitting slumped on the other side of the confessional screen, very, very tired and definitely not hung over, if anyone was wondering. He was the priest of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic church in Chicago, after all, and priests weren’t supposed to down a bottle of whiskey with nothing but their houseplant, Leviticus, for company on a perfectly fine Tuesday night before Wednesday confession. Not that Leviticus wasn’t great company, because he listened amazingly and never interrupted Patrick when he was talking, but he was just a spider plant, who closely resembled fancy, overgrown grass, and couldn’t really reply to anything said to him for that very reason.
