Summary
Elrond visits Durin at Khazad-dûm following the battle of Eregion. The pair haven't seen each other since Elrond came to ask for Durin's support before the battle, and the two of them have experienced their fair share of grief since then. Their friendship is due another difficult conversation, this time fuelled by insomnia and a few glasses of Durin's favourite mead.

Summary
Even for humans, touching another person's daemon is seen as an act of profound intimacy, reserved only for those who shared the closest romantic bonds. Elves take this to the extreme, where even wedded couples did not touch each other's daemons, ever. The act was so rare, so unheard of, that it has come to be seen as more of a violation than an act of love.
Elrond's daemon, however, seemed to be glued to Durin, for reasons neither elf nor dwarf could quite place their fingers on.
