Despite her daemon by her side and every other part of her body being intact, it was like she had lost a vital part of her humanity. The sheer unfairness of this perfectly nice stranger on television eliciting such horror while he barely reacted to his teammates using slurs was not lost on him. The face was just a body part, like an arm or a leg. Why was one body part’s absence barely worth a mention while another brought abject revulsion?
Shane felt the same when he saw a person without a daemon. That was magnified tenfold when he saw Ilya Rozonov in the same state.

Some say a curse leaves a mark on the soul. That the fraction of the population who experience it are forever changed.
This is true. Those educated in the matter know that in fact, however, a curse goes even further than this. It splits the soul in two. When a curse manifests on a boy's tenth birthday, their soul is made physical in the form of a daemon: a being that takes the physical appearance of an animal. They are a companion for life.
A child's daemon can typically change between forms at will. The settling of a daemon into one permanent form marks the shift into adulthood, and is the end goal of all students of St Churnley's School for Cursed Boys - total mastery of their curse, and of the sacred bond between them and their daemon.

TJ Rietveld, formerly TJ Bright, has always defined himself at least in part by the fact that he made it out. He escaped the Foundation and is now living a free life in the multiverse. So when he is given the mission to enter the Playtime Co factory to retrieve a lost item of incredible power that is causing the area to warp into an unstable disaster zone (well, more of one than it already is), and thus the opportunity to pay his freedom forward and free the factory's inhabitants, he takes it.
Alongside SCP-079, referred to as Nines and freed in the same containment breach as TJ, his daemon Azerael, and a complex script written for them by a precognitive ally, TJ dives deep into the factory. But trinkets and friends aren't the only thing he's searching for in the depths. There is a being down there with the knowledge TJ needs to bring a certain kind of "joy" to the Foundation after all...
