Summary
Askeladd does not care about children, he doesn't care about his men, and he doesn't care about Thorfinn.
He has reasons for what he does. He always has reasons.
What he does, for Thorfinn, what he has done for Thorfinn, is practical, incidental, or necessary—nothing more than damage control. Nothing more than a investment into a soldier that does good work for him.
Every time something happens, there's always an excuse, always a reason.
Of course he would have a reason- without one- why would he do anything?
Or
Five times Askeladd wrote off something he did as some grand ploy to make Thorfinn a better fighter, or just a mistake, or something he did just for the hell of it.
One time where he has no excuse and can't just bullshit his way out of this one.

As they walked around the perimeter of the unit, the warrior looked over at Wulf. The redheaded man adjusted the hilt of his sword in its sheath and started, “I hear the king-”
Wulf lifted his head to look at the man who now had a wolfish smile across his face, “I heard the king has a harem full of lads, is that true?”
Wulf didn’t respond to the smile, only to the question, “Yes, his highness doesn’t want to run the risk of fathering any bastards.”
“Cautious” The man responded as they both dipped their heads under low hanging branches.
Wulf grumbled in recognition.
“I also heard all the lads look alike, blonde-”
Interrupting immediately, Wulf barked, “I think you should exercise some caution of your own.”
