She couldn't remember pulling the trigger or the kickback of the rifle. Had she already wiped out the act of shooting him, mere instants from it happening? Rachel lowered her rifle, and it slid from her hands, clattering on the pavement. She stared at him as her mind raced at what she had done. Then something caught the corner of her eye; she turned her head, seeing the tendrils of blue smoke winding from a gun's barrel, then Max's arms stretched out, trembling as she let go of a held breath.
