Will doesn't let him finish, words landing heavy.
“… What letter?”
Mike stops pacing. His face drains in a second. He doesn’t answer.
There's a new possibility. A terrible one.
“Mike,” Will steps closer, searching desperately for his face instead of fighting it. “What letter?”

“Mike?” He asked and felt ashamed for the thought that went through his mind.
“Hmm?”
“Could you–” How would he even ask the question out loud?
“Could I do what?”
Will took in a shaking breath, looked down to Mike’s lips and up to his eyes again. “Mike could you… could you maybe kiss me?” Then suddenly panic moved through him and he turned away. Why did I ask that? Oh god. He will push me away. “I– It wouldn’t mean anything.” He added quickly. “I just– You don’t have to do it. I’m sorry.”
“Oh.” Was Mike’s only answer for a few ever longer stretching seconds. “I mean if you want to.”Defeated from a horrible date, Will is desperate to know what it feels like to be loved. In a hopeless moment he asks Mike to kiss him.

But it wasn’t a monster that came out of the trees. It was a person. A boy.
Mike froze.
Then he was spotted, and the boy stopped in his tracks; with skillful movements, he quickly slung the rifle off his shoulder and pointed it at Mike’s chest. Mike raised his hands while trying to keep most of his weight on his left leg.
“Whoa. Hey,” Mike said, his eyes wide as he stared at the tip of the rifle. “Just hold on. I’m not—I’m not going to hurt you.”

Everyone settled into their seats and the questions flew across the room: how were finals, when did you cut your hair, any news on the job search, blah blah blah. Mike was hardly listening. He was picking at loose threads on the armchair cushion, staring at Will’s earring. Finally, he worked up the nerve to ask—
“When’d you get your ear pierced?”
Will glanced his way and smiled, a little sheepish. “Like a month ago,” he said, twisting the gold stud between his fingertips.
“What does Carlton think about it?” Max asked, leaning forward with a wolfish grin.
Will flushed, ducking his head. “He likes it,” he said, simply.
Mike’s mouth went dry. The world skidded to a stop. “Who’s Carlton?”

Summary
At twenty-two, Mike’s life is far better than he ever thought it would be. He graduated from The University of Chicago in May, after getting his diploma in English, and his entire future being at his fingertips (something he always thought he would be terrified of) feels almost exhilarating.
He loves his apartment back in Chicago and it’s horrible winters, he loves his shitty car that’s dented to hell and back. He loves sitting at his typewriter as novel ideas flow from his fingertips. He loves that he finally did it, he escaped Hawkins. It’s something he’s proud of even four years later, because he left and grew into himself and didn’t become his goddamn father like he was always terrified he would. He loves that he healed enough to willingly return to his godawful hometown for his sister’s wedding.
More than anything else, he is completely and utterly in love with Will Byers.
And that is something his best friend can never, ever know.
OR: the party returns to hawkins for jonathan and nancy's wedding in 1993, and mike is sick of pining after his best friend from a distance
