It was a hole. Just a giant, dark, kind of musty smelling hole in the Earth. Yet John B was looking at it like it was the answer to everything.
Which, after a week on this fucking abandoned hunk of rock in the middle of fucking nowhere, Kiara realized with a quick glance to the Pogues’ sun burnt shoulders and cheeks, maybe he wasn’t too far off. The cave was dark and ominous, but at least it’d provide them shelter from the elements, assuming it was safe.
Their half-attempts at lean-tos and huddling under palm trees that didn’t actually supply any shade was clearly not working anymore. And who knew how much longer they’d be stuck here?

He looked up at her, her moist brown eyes shining back at him, piercing through him a way that felt far too exposing for his comfort. But still, she’d been vulnerable with him, so maybe he could find enough courage to reciprocate in this small way. This one time.
She inhaled sharply and her chin quivered as she continued looking at him. “I don’t know how to do that,” she responded, sounding simultaneously ashamed and hopeful.

Summary

He hadn’t heard from her in months. He was only imagining it because it’s been too long and he must’ve forgotten what she actually sounded like.
JJ’s heart raced. What the ever-loving fuck was she doing here? This wasn’t her school. She had no friends here - she’d made that abundantly clear. Kildare High was no place for the new and improved Kiara Carrera.
