Just like that, he was alone.
With a heavy sigh, he perched himself on Annie's empty stool, leaning his face on his folded arms on the bar top. Abandoned at the club. Pathetic. Fuck, where were his shots?
As if the thought summoned him, he heard the clink of glasses right in front of him, and he straightened up to find the bartender pouring two lowball glasses of bourbon, neat; not at all what he ordered.
“Courtesy of the gentleman,” the bartender said before he could ask, jerking his chin over John's shoulder.
He smelled him before he could turn, and all the hair on the nape of his neck stood up; the ever-lingering sulfur scent of firearms, the scent of that body wash, eucalyptus and cedarwood, the faint and familiar tang of his sweat.
John was frozen in place, heart hammering wildly in his chest.
How? Why?
Unbearable heat at his back, one hand gently braced against his waist where his shirt didn't cover him, the other arm reaching past him to grab one of the glasses; and if there had been any doubt in John's mind about who stood at his back, the tattoos inked into that skin could belong to no other.
