Mark has to let him go. Mark’s fingers start trembling. But he has to let him go.
Wardo turns to leave and when his hand land on the doorknob, providing himself an exit, Mark’s voice breaks through silence.

Arthur whips around in the saddle to stare at him, eyes hard and dark, like the storm clouds building on the distant horizon. “What love? You haven’t got a love,” he snaps, like he’s the sole keeper of all Merlin’s secrets.

And it hurts to hear, rips through him with a pain so visceral and concrete he lays his hand over his heart to try in vain to still the lurching thud. Love like this is too vast to sustain, he thinks. He never prepared to have it returned, not anytime soon anyway, so the force of his want and Arthur’s combined is not something he’s prepared to endure. To have the way he loves Arthur mirrored right back with equal force feels like something that could tear the whole castle down, rip the veil asunder and fuse all parallel worlds. “No need to trade. You have that already,” he vows.

“What if I am,” Arthur says, and ignores the glee he feels at the return of Emrys’ voice. “There’s hardly anything you can do about it, can you? You’ve been refusing my father for two years now; that’s two years you’ve been stuck without a way out. You’re the only one responsible for your continued capture. If you’d just brought back my mother—”
“We all lose people,” Emrys says flatly. “I suggest therapy.”
Or: Uther catches the most powerful demon he can find in order to bring back his wife from the dead. Emrys, however, stays adamantly mute in his captivity. He only speaks to one person: Arthur. And they won’t really be a person, so if they can really love is somewhat debatable. But still, if you were waiting for someone to lose your virginity to, well, here’s your chance. Or I could give you more riches. Not that you need them. Or I could—well, there’s a lot of things magic can do for you. Things that aren’t reliant on very dark magic to make a shell-version of your mother come to life.”
