“I could marry Svetlana,” Ilya says in one breath, like the sentence bores him with its mundanity.
Shane feels like he’s been pushed from a cliff, left to fall and break his bones, like the lungs just got ripped from his chest, like a bullet was shot on his shameful, stupid, desperate heart.
He likes her. She makes him happy. In the rare times he said her name in Shane's presence, it brought a smile soft as cotton on the Russian’s face.
She was there first. She's a woman. She's perfect for Ilya, his lifestyle, and his career. Why would he bother himself trying something more with Shane? Why, when he could have that more with someone who would be so much less complicated?

Or Shane thinks his love has to be selfish for it to have any worth. Ilya disagrees but that man is circling around the subject from so far away it might as well be from space.

“Did you have any pets growing up?” Shane asked as they drove back from dinner with his parents one evening. It came only a day or so after the last out of the blue question Shane had asked and Ilya was sure there was some kind of ulterior motive; he just wasn’t sure what it was yet.
“Are you trying to steal my identity?” he asked, only half serious. He could practically hear Harris in his head telling him to get a more secure password, to stop making all his security question answers easily googleable information, to please for the love of god just have some modicum of understanding of internet safety.
“What?”

The reporter had taken his words in the complete opposite way than Ilya had meant them, but he supposed he was too committed to stop now. “Of course not.”
“Of course.” The reporter parroted, laughing nervously.
“Obviously, we are already in a relationship.”

In Ilya’s rookie season, he impulsively jokes about dating Shane to an invasive reporter. Then, he just… keeps doing it, since publicly announcing it enough times that everyone writes it off as a joke is a great way to hide a clandestine relationship.
