Summary
Rufus Shinra hadn’t considered himself the type of person who could bond with others easily, at least not on the personal, emotional level needed to form a true relationship. Everything was a series of exchanges and deals that could bring him closer to his goals, regardless of whose feelings he had to hurt in the process. A lifetime of being surrounded by people with a similar mindset had led him to have a sixth sense of sorts, for determining a person’s usefulness upon first glance, and exactly what kind of purpose they could serve him.
Which was why he knew from the moment he saw the strange, otherworldly child in the lab, he would be vital in his ascension to power, just like he knew he’d need more than a couple of empty promises and threats to sway what could turn into Shinra’s strongest weapon to his side. No, he’d need to be more creative than that, more “sincere.”
“You can let it all out. I promise I won’t tell anybody.”
“This will be our secret.”

After Rufus escaped from the explosion of his office, while recovering from the wounds from the explosion, he was captured and tortured by an ex-soldier, 'Mutten', in a cellar in Kalm for more than a few weeks. (You can find the Audiobook on YouTube)
