In the Lands Between, where Destined Death escapes all but a few, how can one man be separated from his goal and his destiny?
Himself.
The many Tarnished who have become so have one goal: to reach the Elden Ring and become Elden Lord. Yet, none have accomplished so, they have all failed. Unable to sustain their sanity they gave up, crestfallen or mindless before the inevitable goal that is dangling right before them. Their maidens' aid all redundant.
In the Lands Between, all that is needed is a Tarnished with the strength of body and mind, and a maiden with the power to put it back together if it falls apart.
And when this is all over, they can watch the stars together; over this world that they saved.

Summary
Conscripted into the annexation of an independent city. Conscripted into being part of the most one-sided war in modern history. Conscripted into cleaning up the government messes one after the other, just because he holds himself responsible.
Erebonia is about to fall apart. The cracks have been there for two years, and all it needs is one little push. All that's there to keep them from doing it is one man with a dream and his friends alongside him. If it's enough, he doesn't know, but there is no way in hell that he isn't going to try.
Rewrite starting from Cold Steel 3. Features a more aggressive Rean who hates what the government made him do and misses his friends way too much.
