In the Lands Between, where Destined Death escapes all but a few, how can one man be separated from his goal and his destiny?

The many Tarnished who have become so have one goal: to reach the Elden Ring and become Elden Lord. Yet, none have accomplished so, they have all failed. Unable to sustain their sanity they gave up, crestfallen or mindless before the inevitable goal that is dangling right before them. Their maidens' aid all redundant.
In the Lands Between, all that is needed is a Tarnished with the strength of body and mind, and a maiden with the power to put it back together if it falls apart.

Summary

Summary
