It was about discovery. That’s how it started, anyway.
Steven discovered new things about his Gem everyday, each one more surprising and fascinating than the last. He discovered the way it had grown and changed since they’d come face to face on that fateful day, meeting the literal embodiment of his powers for the first time. Their first touch was like a burst of color, warmth and happiness, a kind of love he never knew he was capable of but had been inside him his entire life.
Almost four years later, Razz didn't have to share a name, and Steven didn't have to be alone anymore.

Summary
To some degree, Steven had always known he’d end up having to face himself in some form or another. Maybe he’d make peace with his gem half on some distant planet. Maybe he would be forced to address every problem he never wanted to think about, becoming undone in the process. Hell, White Diamond could un-change-her-mind and rip out his gem again. It wouldn’t surprise him.
It didn’t matter. Steven knew it was bound to happen.When it does, he hadn’t been prepared for blatant refusal. A complete lack understanding. No small piece of a soul. An absolutely let-down.
It all boiled down to one key flaw.Steven hadn’t realized it could be so much more complicated.

By nature, Steven is a giver. By nurture, Spinel becomes a taker. When the vengeful gem storms Beach City with weapons at the ready, she easily overwhelms the Crystal Gems. While Steven struggles to heal his friends, Spinel taunts and teases. But, watching him care for them sends her into a jealous spiral. It isn’t long before jealousy turns into obsession. And obsession…into possession. Steven doesn’t know it, but he isn’t just on a time limit to save his friends and the planet from Spinel, but to save himself as well.

When Spinel attacked his planet, she didn't bring just a rejuvenator but a corruptor as well. He knew she wanted vengeance against his mom. He didn't know she would slash him with the rejuvenator before ripping his gem free and slashing that with the corruptor. Steven is split in two and his gem half doesn't look right. For one, it's red and not pink. For two, it's gained sentience different from his human half. And not the good kind of sentience either. Now Steven is fully human and fighting not just against a rogue gem, but his corrupted self as well.

Steven is separated from his gem and unfortunately it doesn't reform soon enough to be the hero it should have been to save the day. With the opposing forces too strong for them, the crystal gems that are left make a quick escape with the humans and return to Earth, without his gem.
And when it comes back for him, it isn't him anymore.
