No, as the next heir to the family, the firstborn scion, Sirius was protected. He didn't understand it, not as a young boy, and not once in any real capacity before he was banished, but the protective shield kept him safe regardless.
He could be punished—berated, starved, and tortured with invisible magic—but he could not be fundamentally changed, he could not be turned into something he was not.
