When Elphaba hears of Galinda and Fiyero's wedding, she can't resist going to her friend. Meant to be a quick visit to bolster herself before confronting the Wizard, her fragile emotions get the best of her and lead to Galinda making a choice Elphaba didn't see coming.

“I’m fine.”
True to form, Elphaba sent back a reassuring platitude, clearly aiming to assuage Galinda’s concern, and not at all succeeding, as she watched Elphie’s face fall as soon as the words left her downturned lips. Her friend was always one to care only for making those she cared about comfortable, without taking any comfort for herself.
“Oh sweetheart,” the words were escaping her with nary a thought or consideration. She didn’t stop forward until her body brushed against Elphaba’s clothing and her hands were either side of her face, brushing against her cheeks to wipe away the first droplets as they fell from her long eyelashes. “My darling, don’t cry. You’re not alright, of course you’re not.”
