    Sephiroth taunted Cloud from above, "Tell me what you cherish most. Give me the pleasure of taking it away."
    Cloud replied, perhaps without thinking of the consequences, "I pity you. You just don't get it at all. There's not a thing I don't cherish."
    All too happy to take everything from Cloud, Sephiroth obliged him. Sadly, for Sephiroth, things didn't quite go as planned.

    It happened so quickly. Cloud could hardly understand what he was seeing when finally, he dropped from midair and slammed through one floor, and then another and then left a solid impact crater on yet another floor. Alarms blared in the distance and electricity sparked from the damage. Cloud faced a closed window and saw several once destroyed but somehow now intact reactors release exhaust into the sky.

    "What the?" The voice of a child exclaimed.

    Cloud looked in the reflection of the window and saw Zack. A very much alive, much younger, currently slack-jawed, Zack.

    Kunsel Zelda had a simple plan.

    Step 1: Rescue Cloud and Zack.
    Step 2: Kill everyone in the Manor and burn it to the ground.
    Step 3: Disappear into the mountains and never resurface.
    Step 4: Bring Aerith to them (if it wouldn't compromise Zack and Cloud's safety)

    But even for simple plans, he had over seventy-five back-up plans. Getting turned into a housecats and getting thrown into a different world were not a part of the back-up plans. At all.

    Every split in the timeline means one goes well and one goes badly. Statistically speaking, there has to be a timeline where everything goes wrong and everything is lost. But those timelines need to be pruned, sheared off the stronger branches where life still thrives. Cloud Strife is the only reason his current timeline exists. After giving Sephiroth the Black Materia to destroy the world, he's left to wander the barren landscape alone for all eternity. Unable to die because of his own link to Sephiroth, he's keeping this fading timeline open simply by existing. But Gaia needs this timeline gone, so there's only one option: Remove Cloud from it entirely, and hand him over to another.

    But this new world is very different from the one he originally comes from. On Gaia's World of the Tree, the most important bond people have is with the planet, while in Odin's World of the Wolf, that honor belongs to the bonds between people. Lifemates and packs, to be precise, so this is going to be interesting.

    A.K.A. Cloud Strife is having none of this shit, and you can't make him.

    Chapter 1's beginning spints off my fic On Bound and Broken Wings. That's the only OBABW reference though, the rest is standalone.

    The goddess may have been an agent of the planet, her foremost, concentrated voice... but she was also mischief incarnate when it suited her. Cloud would have cursed her in every language he knew, if not for the fact that he was now, apparently, a wolf.

    And also back in time.

    Cloud Strife would have loved trying to figure that one out, but a certain preteen redhead by the name of Genesis Rhapsodos was currently dangled around his neck and cooing about his “Gift of the Goddess”. Oh, Hel. Minerva was going to have a lot to answer for.
