This isn't the first time that Martin has been handed a tool such as this. It feels familiar enough as he turns it in his palm, inspecting the length of hide that flicks dramatically at its end in much the same way that his horse, Nessa – and Jon, for that matter – will swipe their tail from side to side to signal their frustrations. But he was never keen to use a whip of any sort, and would avoid them whenever he could. He's found that the livestock he's cared for on the estate could more often be reasoned with, if one just met them on their level. Maybe a rough and assured hand to guide them when they're frightened, but pain for the sake of it always felt too cruel.
And yet…

The long and short of it is, Martin’s usually in for eight these days.
He, as usual, lumbers his yawning way into the breakroom, and today is unfortunately one of the approximate three-out-of-five working days that he forgets about the sticky-out-bit on the doorframe. He bashes his hip on it, snaps a choice word and digs his squashed Tesco croissant out of his bag, then dumps the bag beside the offending door. He flips off the sticky-out-bit, and faces the room, and –
Nearly jumps out of his skin.
Because Jonathan Sims is dead asleep on the beaten-up sofa.
