“Sorry, partner,” Jed said. He scowled, spitting flecks of sand out of his mouth.

How would the story go if Octavius hadn't been able to break that glass with his helmet?

“Me?” the other man said, turning slowly on his heel. He had his hands stuffed in his pockets and a smarmy look on his awfully familiar face. "Name’s Jedediah."

“You’ve gotta be kidding me,” Jedediah said, and he turned tail and walked out.

“Do it,” the general spat around his split lip. “Do it, and pay. Rome will never stand for such an act of war. They don’t need me.” His eyes were sharp and bright under the edge of his metal helmet. “They’ll come for you. They’ll obliterate you all and claim this land for the Roman Empire.”
Jed swallowed. This wasn’t supposed to happen.

    Summary

And Octavius's got that distant look in his eyes. Jedediah remembers - it's the same look he had when they'd stumbled, one foot in front of the other, leaning on each other as they fought their way back to the museum after crashing into snow taller than themselves; the same look when Jedediah had tumbled out of the hourglass, seconds away from death, and then again when he'd enveloped Octavius in a bone-crushing hug, too giddy from their victory to really process the bursting ache in his heart; and then, when they'd said their final goodbyes, quiet words and half-hidden feelings even while alone in a museum so accustomed to life.
And damn him, because when Jedediah thinks about it like that, he must be crazier than a bessie bug to have not realized it earlier.

or: in which Jedediah gets darted - and it turns out to be quite the enlightening experience.

The crate lid clicks shut with all the finality of a coffin.
    “This is it,” Jed murmurs.
Octavius doesn’t say anything; he just huffs and shifts among the packing peanuts.

He reaches out blindly and finds the wall with the palm of one shaking hand. It guides him softly to the floor, where the tile is ready to catch him as he collapses unsteadily to his knees. It does hurt to fall this way, but it doesn’t really matter – in fact, it’s almost grounding. At least the tiles here are stone and not the cold concrete of the Smithsonian building where—
    where—
He can still feel the glass against his palm.

Two scenes inspired by some conversations on the Discord server.
Part 1: Just before getting shipped out, the boys share one last conversation.
Part 2: They may have gotten home safely, but they nearly didn't, and Octavius is not okay with this.
