There was a small scrabbling sound under the stairs. Rats, most likely. Then the sound of metal clinking against metal, which was unusual – more likely to be the harbinger of a fierce corpse. Lan Zhan readied his sword.
It was not a fierce corpse, but a sadder kind of walking dead: the skinniest dog he’d ever seen crept out from under the stairs and looked at them, hunched over and crouched down in fear, tail tucked between its legs and up against its belly.
Lan Wangji and Jiang Wanyin search for Wei Wuxian, rescue a dog, and fall in love.

Yibo’s laugh has always been so at odds with the stoic and calm persona he sells, something sweet. Xiao Zhan still remembers the first time he heard Yibo laugh properly, when Xiao Zhan flubbed his lines during the script reading, little croaking giggles ringing in his ears. It hadn’t been a life-changing event — Xiao Zhan’s life isn’t divided into before and after hearing Yibos laugh — except that it is, just a little. Before Yibo, after Yibo. Before The Untamed, after whatever the mess that happened after was. Yibo being here right now fucks up the entire concept of after Yibo.

Long-ago memories replayed in his mind: Xiao Zhan laughing in his ear as they rode off on Yibo’s motorcycle to nowhere special; Xiao Zhan reclining in the grass; Xiao Zhan kissing him outside under a full moon. His throat tightened, and a deep feeling of loss overwhelmed him.

His fingertips tense and relax, and Lan Zhan takes a deep breath and squares his shoulders almost imperceptibly. “Would you like me to cut your hair for you?”
Wei Ying’s brain skids to a halt. Oh. Huh. That would. That would be a hell of a lot easier, wouldn’t it? Lan Zhan would at least be able to see and touch the back of his head at the same time, and that’s half the battle. Even if it’s not a good haircut, it would be something, and it probably wouldn’t end with Wei Ying in tears, and it would end with Wei Ying having shorter hair, which is the only thing he really wants right now.
“Yeah,” he says, a little awed. “If you don’t mind then that would be great, Lan Zhan.” He can almost feel the breeze on his undercut again, spine tingling in anticipation.

“You must be the witch,” Wang Yibo says, and Xiao Zhan remembers the caution not to take anything personally.
“Xiao Zhan,” he offers, settling into the empty chair at the next station over and letting the stylist remove his hat, setting it on the counter in front of him.
“I know.” Wang Yibo grins at him in the mirror, holding still as the stylist working on him dabs foundation onto his forehead. “I’ve met a lot of singers but I’ve never met a witch before.”
“Earthwitch,” Xiao Zhan corrects as his stylist combs her fingers through his hair, getting to know the shape of it. He then feels compelled to add, “and how do you know you’ve never met one?”
Yibo blinks, and then his eyes sharpen. “I would know, wouldn’t I?”
Xiao Zhan smiles. “Would you?”
It’s no fault of Xiao Zhan’s that he’s the first earthwitch most people have knowingly met; however he’s about to find out that there’s no one quite like Wang Yibo.
