Caleb would do anything if you asked. All while keeping his thoughts on the straight and narrow. At this point, he could probably see you naked and not react in any way other than to tease you. It was a bit sad, him realizing that he’d almost perfected becoming the version of himself he wanted to be. That he had to be. But that was for the best.
Because brothers didn’t want to fuck their sisters.
“You know I’ll always take care of you.” He said, stroking your hair. “You work so hard, between raising Ash and working.”
“Don’t say that like you don't help.” You chuckled, looking a bit downcast. “You’re here all the time. I shouldn't be so tired. You’re practically Ash’s dad.”
His already crushed heart collapsed completely. But on the outside, he gave you a polite smile. “He’s the best nephew a man could ask for. And he loves you so much. He even chose your favorite flavor for his birthday cake.”
“That silly boy.” You sighed, nuzzling into Caleb’s side. Soon after, you were asleep again. And Caleb just watched. A sentinel made just for you, and who was happy to extend all of his protectiveness to your son. A son with green eyes. Not purple.
And that was how it was always meant to be.

Summary
You suddenly think back to your childhood. The memories are oddly tangled, like overlapping chains, bound by secret promises, codependency, and a constant sense of push and pull. Caleb would step away and you would follow, as if you had been trained. Then you would do the same, back away, pout and retaliate, and he would pursue. Back and forth until you wondered who had started it all. Then there was the faded memory of Grandma and Caleb fighting in the kitchen. He’d just had a growth spurt and was impossibly lanky. You had never discovered what they were fighting about, just that Caleb became more subdued after, softer, almost more coy. Then there were the hugs when Grandma couldn’t see. The notes passed under bedroom doors. It was almost like a game that only the two of you could play.
You swallow, feeling almost nauseous. The sensation is similar to when you haven't eaten enough. So you go to the kitchen, yanking open the refrigerator door and pulling out an apple. The skin breaks under your teeth, crisp, yet you find it hard to chew and swallow. The flavor is too sweet, thick and syrupy while all you are craving is acid and venom. You lean over the sink; hands gripping at the edge.
Fuck waiting.
