Summary
Margaret had not expected to see Mr. Thornton so soon, and certainly not so closely. Margaret wavers backwards, towards her front door, and Mr. Thornton descends the steps until his shoes are touching the cobble below. She had rather expected to have more time to work through her own thoughts on the Incident at the mill, before seeing him again. And yet, he is here, acting the proper gentleman, asking after her welfare. Margaret expects it will be easy enough to brush past him, after giving a satisfactory answer as to her health.
Mr. Thornton, unsurprisingly, is more persistent than that.
