He may be from the island, but he spent most of his childhood in Athens. For all the stories of virgin sacrifices, he's not heard or seen anyone being taken. The smell of death here suggests he was wrong, or he's not the first Thomas promised clemency to.
His life was to be forfeit regardless. Here, he stands a chance. Slay the beast, return with proof—it's head, but any part will do—and his crimes are forgiven.

“Simon,” Soap purred into his ear tantalizingly. He stepped away from the guard and looked back in Ghost’s direction. “Take care of him for me, sir?” he pleaded hopefully.
Ghost gripped his weapon until his knuckles turned white. He stayed quiet, flipping his scope back to its normal settings and letting his eyes bounce between Soap and the slowly waking guard. Pushing out a heavy breath, Ghost switched his laser back on and pointed it at Soap. “You’re fucking lucky I don’t put one between your eyes for disobeying a direct order, soldier,” Ghost seethed.
Before Soap had a chance to react to his threat, Ghost pivoted his sights to the guard and fired three shots furiously. One to kill him, and two more to desecrate his dead body for putting his worthless hands on Johnny.

Summary
The most annoying thing about the weird rumours that go around about Ghost, is that some of them are true. It's almost cliche to admit that he likes violence and pain... likes it a lot more than he should. Enough that sometimes he gets too worked up to wait until the mission's over to sort himself out. It's never been a problem. Not until Soap walks in on him. Then it's a big problem, but maybe not for the reasons either of them were expecting.

It’s the opposite of his nightmare from last week. He’s sitting in the office of someone who would’ve been his superior if they were still enlisted and he’s being told he’s talented and intuitive like it’s nothing. But it’s not nothing. It’s everything.

Taking a careful step forward, he looks down at him through lidded eyes, framed in that soft blond that he’s seen Johnny try follow even on the field. The heat of anger has burnt out of him, leaving a low burning ember of interest.
The red in Johnny’s cheeks deepen slightly, and he casts his eyes to the side. Unconsciously worry his split lower lip, antagonizing the minor wound in agonized thought until he tastes blood once more.

Summary
While stuck in port for repairs, the crew of esteemed pirate Captain John Price's vessel keep themselves busy with a variety of activities. For one John 'Soap' MacTavish, this includes accepting a contract to hunt down a ferocious sea monster referred to as "The Ghost", which seems to have an insatiable taste for human blood and a horrifying skull face that drives survivors to madness. Soap manages to injure the creature during a storm, but can't quite make the killing blow before it slips back into the abyss from which it came.
But when he finds it hiding in a cave to nurse its injuries, he learns that the Ghost is more than just a ravenous, mindless beast, and he has to make an important decision: complete the bounty and get enough gold to cement himself as one of the greatest pirates of all time, or betray his found family and side with a known killer.

He smooths back his damp, loose mohawk before he moves to the side of the car to lean against the door, pushing out his chest to display his tattoos and plastering on his winning smile.
It works—hook, line and sinker as the truck slows to a crawl. The door slams shut, and when the owner appears from behind, John swallows hard, his throat growing dry from more than just the heat with his heart thumping an unfamiliar swing in his chest.
