Tav sends Gale to guide Elminster to their camp, promising the old wizard whichever of their provisions he requires. He wants more than just cheese and wine and Gale has been without physical affection for so long that he is happy to provide. At least, he thinks he's happy to take the role he had under Elminster back when he was being tutored by him, but he finds that he wants more. He just wants to be touched.
But he doesn't deserve that, does he?

There's so much good stuff in this fic. The weird pining/obssession/stalking from Gale that occupies 120% of his mind. The weird gender-essentialist macho fight of sexual dominance that can only be resolved by fucking. The fact that's it's happening between one man in a normal consensual sexual relationship, and some other guy they both know, and Tav is none the wiser. The mental image of Gale angrily jerking off in the woods. The mental image of pantless Gale scurrying red-faced away with a bouncing boner. The irrationality and disproportionality of the anger he feels at Astarion. I read this 3 months ago, and the thought of the angry voyeuristic masterbation in the woods still makes me laugh. Truly one of the Hate Sex fics of all time.

Gale wriggled in a half-hearted attempt to free himself. A fang flashed at him, taunting him as the vampire leaned ever-so-closely. Did Astarion notice how he made little effort to escape? With one arm free, surely he was aware that all it would take was a firm yank to unbind his other arm and a simple spell to send him flying—
"So you haven't been gawking at me these past few days?" the vampire asked, leaning closer.
—But he didn't want to be free, did he? He enjoyed how his heart raced with Astarion looming over him. It was as though he was imbibed on a pleasant liquor; there was a certain enjoyable dizzying head rush, coupled with the pleasant tingle along his limbs as he stared down the vampire.

With two discerning appetites, a deal to keep each other fed is the one thing that ties Astarion and Gale together. But the proverbial collar slips all too easily around Gale's throat, the lead feels right in Astarion's unchained hands, and both men think they've bested the other in a game neither should be playing.
In any case. As the greats say in lanceboard: there is no shame in losing to a stronger foe.
