Six months after the explosion at the lab, Gustave returns to work with an arm gone and a brain still far from healed. The university told him to take more time. His friends tried to pull him back into the world, but he’s learned how to turn them all away.
On his first day back, he meets Verso Dessendre; quiet, steady, with scars of his own and a beautiful streak of silver in his hair. A man who restores paintings for a living, yet struggles to restore himself.
As they grow closer, Gustave begins to wonder if Verso might be right.
Maybe some damage isn’t the end, but the start of something worth holding together. -

Gustave Lumière has spent six years surviving. The only thing he could do was take whatever engineering work he could find while trying to ignore the grief, poverty, and humiliation left behind by the railway accident that took his left arm.
When he is hired to repair the aging Dessendre manor, he expects cold aristocrats. What he could not expect is Verso Dessendre.
The middle child is curious, lonely and endlessly persistent. Verso is fascinated by both Gustave’s work and the man himself. When the distance between them shrinks, Gustave has no choice but to confront the possibility that he may deserve more than survival.
