Summary
Jon stands at the edge of the cliff and closes his eyes. The salt smell of the ocean, the wind whipping around him, the crashing waves below. If he stands very still, he thinks he can hear the sound of her voice carrying over the wind – a soft, distant melody; it wavers and dips with his memory of it.
When he feels the first touch of frost, he opens his eyes because it's wrong. The melody, her voice, it goes discordant and the sky changes from endless, soft grey to something darker. He turns to look behind him and takes a step back, the cliff edge cracking under his feet.
The Cold Man should not be here, he thinks. The Cold Man never comes here.
