Anna stood in the kitchen. Quiet filling the area besides the bubbling of the pot in front of her and the scrapping of the metal whisk in said pot as she stirred. The radio sat on the counter within arms reach, yet Anna didn't turn it on. Amiri was gone, probably just leaving work if the time on the stove was correct, leaving just her home alone.
It was almost as if the universe itself was mocking her. For her to be left alone in an empty house on the one day that was burnt into her mind. She wondered what today would have been, had that argument not broken out.

Summary
The human mind is quite impressive once one thinks about it. How it can take all different sources of input and translate them into something able to be understood. How it can make even the most annoying things background noise once it happens long enough.
At least, Bryan's assuming it was his brain getting used to the constant whine and hummed pitches of the portal. After so long, it was just another noise. Another thing he had to deal with. Just the constant white sound that rose and fell in random pitches, always coming from the direction of the portal.
It constantly dragged at his attention, and there were several nights—and days—he found himself walking towards the portal with static filling his head before someone knocked him out of it.
