Stede had always loved picking flowers. When that passion was… discouraged, he simply turned to reading about them. Thus, Stede knew practically everything there was to know about flower language and symbolism. And, lilacs, he knew, especially in this shade, stood for first love.
Or: Stede prances through a meadow looking for lilacs, then gifts them to Ed, who think's he's utterly undeserving of them.

Lilacs have held significance in many different cultures, serving as a reminder of youth, springtime, renewal, and spirituality.
Ed, however, didn’t care for any of this. To him, lilacs just meant Stede.Or: Three times Ed realized he was in love with Stede, and one time Stede showed his love to Ed (both are completely oblivious to the other’s pining)

Stede had noticed it from the very beginning, or at least, since Ed was no longer trying to stab him. At first, he had chalked it up to the awkwardness between them. They were figuring out boundaries, and Stede was absolutely going to respect them. It was fine, really, the way things were. It didn’t bother him at all. He was fine with this. Really.
Or: Stede misses Ed's touch, but he would never let him know that.
