My ear presses to the other side of the bedroom door - you sigh. Slumped down on the other side, your back probably pressed to the doorframe, legs curled in close - not quite sick of me yet. Otherwise, you vanish beneath enough blankets to drown out my voice, your own little fort to keep your dummy brother out.
Over the years, I've learned the frequency in which you broadcast. Memorized your patterns like routes etched into star maps. I know the way your voice lifts when you’re trying to sound braver than you feel; the sound of your laugh when you really mean it.
So if you’re sitting here, right up against the barrier between us?
It means you're not too mad. Not yet. And so, I knock again.
