Snake used to say: "I'm blue collar, you're white collar." It was a half-joke that marked an easy divide in their roles, between the physical and the technical.
Otacon can't really agree, not when his white collar is so often stained with his partner's blood. It's hands-on work he could never have anticipated, but someone's gotta do it.
If only he wasn't so squeamish.

Ian has to fight hard for Mickey to become his boyfriend and while everything seems fine at first both of them have to learn how to deal with their insecurities and individual challenges - from Mickey's fear to hurt Ian to Ian's bipolar disorder.

Ian smirks as he imagines a bright, neon Pride rainbow arcing over Mickey’s head; an irrepressible flashing, queer beacon, despite the tough man act. He may not have known him long, but he’s sure Mickey would knock his teeth out and curb stomp him if he knew what he was thinking, and he smiles at that.
Mickey and Ian come from opposite sides of the tracks, but strike up an unexpected and deep friendship. When their lives implode however, it’s tested to the limit – while also revealing that things between them are not quite what they seem.
This is a retelling of Definitely Something Special from Ian's POV and assumes knowledge of that fic. If you haven't read it, you should do so before starting this. You should also read it in its entirety (rather than both side-by-side), or else you'll get spoilers. As with the first fic, this contains some dark and heavy moments detailed in the tags. The tone is mostly humorous and a lot is new material, though some scenes and dialogue have to be repeated. If the title seems weird it'll make sense in context.

Mickey and Ian come from opposite sides of the tracks, but strike up an unexpected and deep friendship. When their lives implode however, it’s tested to the limit – while also revealing that things between them are not quite what they seem.
Despite this being a ‘friends to lovers’ fic it deals with some very heavy and dark subject matter, so if you’re looking for a lite fluff-fest this ain’t it. That’s not to say there’s no fluff – I always balance out the dark stuff with sweet and comedic moments and actually the tone of most of this is humorous. But please be sure to read the tags so you’re not caught off-guard. I also use chapter-by-chapter trigger warnings.
There are two separate versions of this story: Mickey's here and then Ian's. This fic should be read first to avoid spoilers contained in Ian's POV Looking Through a Glass Onion.

And you glued yourself together with shitty school glue and taped down old fuzzy pieces of scotch tape haphazardly over all those broken parts and you kept moving. And you kept fucking up. And you kept going back for more. And it was still blurry and you never stopped being broken, did you?Maybe during all that. Maybe with all that running circles in your head and every image in your mind. And they were all pasted and taped and still broken. Maybe during. During that. Maybe that was when, that was when you decided enough was enough. And those pieces, those pieces would never be whole again. And that paste and that tape and those scars. They could never contain those wounds. Not now. Not then. Not ever.
------Mickey finishes his full sentence for attempted murder and it doesn't go well. I broke Mickey and now it's Ian's turn to put him back together... if he can. He will, because in fiction it always ends well.

Though it was not something he would normally do, he finds himself strangely drawn to the man and decides to pick him up. Things seem uneventful at first, but Mickey would soon find out that this man would become so much more to him than just a stranger on the road.
