It's dark in his and John's bedroom, and if it wasn't for the fact that it's the middle of the night, and he can hear John snoring, and he knows by that logic the room is supposed to be dark, he would have figured it out either way.
So he imagines his current position if it were existing in a vacuum. There's nothing before, nothing after. The room is dark. He can only tell from the lack of any light.
