He looked to be in his late forties. Stubble lining his jaw. There were faint lines around his eyes—earned ones, the kind that came from years of squinting at sunlight or laughing too hard.
He took one look at them—

The ceramic mug slipped slightly in his grip.
For a long, suspended second, nobody breathed.
The man’s eyes—warm brown, familiar brown—locked onto Mike’s face.
His hand began to shake.
Slowly, carefully, like the cup might explode if he moved too fast, he set the coffee down on a nearby table.

Summary
Evangeline Jude Wheeler-Byers was born on February 25, 2025, and from that day on, their lives changed completely. Where there had once been only two cups, now there was also a sippy cup decorated with little animals. The coat rack, where heavy winter coats and Buddy’s blue leash – the golden retriever they had rescued from abuse – used to hang, now held a little green jacket with daisies.
Eva was the perfect blend of the two: the puppy-like eyes of the Wheelers with Will’s hazel color, black curly hair like Mike’s, and Will’s freckles and bunny teeth. As for her personality, Eva was quiet and calm, but very clingy with her parents and closest family – always crying when held by anyone outside her inner circle – and quite jealous, especially of Will. She hated seeing her parents holding other babies and became inconsolable whenever they left her sight.
This led Mike to the situation he found himself in today.
