They probably overpaid for the mule. She was a little old, a little stubborn, with a sad dun colored coat that faded into the sad dun colored farm they bought her from, but Imogen was certain that a mule was the right thing for Laudna. They weren’t as skittish as horses, and while this mule was the first mule they met in their quest for an animal for Laudna to ride, Imogen assured Laudna that this mule really was perfect. (And not just because she nuzzled into Imogen’s shoulder within minutes of their introduction.)
Laudna chafes against her ideal ending, and feuds with a mule.

It's almost lonely, this new calm in Imogen's head. Usually at the market she'd be treated to Laudna's light, musical inner dialogue about the ripeness of fruits or the bread Zhudanna might like best, but instead it's just quiet. All Imogen gets is what Laudna shows on her face, and the words she says out loud. Words like you don't have to listen in to get my thoughts. I'll always share them willingly. You can just ask.
There's only one thing Imogen wants to ask right now. It's blaring in Imogen's mind like a temple bell, so loudly that even with the circlet she's sure Laudna must be able to hear it. And Laudna is looking at her so sweetly. Every moment they've been parted has made this all-consuming feeling worse, harder to pack away, and this could be her last chance to say it. Her only chance.
She has to say it. She has to ask.

Dani’s hands slip under the collar of Jamie’s jacket and squeeze the muscles of her shoulders through the Blondie shirt she’s wearing. Just to give her hands something to do, so that they’re touching Jamie, somewhere, anywhere. Dani feels too much like she might float away and, even though Jamie is the one causing that - and so much more - touching her is the only thing that seems to ground Dani. Keeps her on the same plane of existence.
