“You’re late tonight, Cupcake,” Vi says.
“Ah. Yes. Indeed—well! You understand how Council meetings are. The more tedious and unimportant, the greater their determination to run through the night,” Caitlyn says, stepping behind the counter and reclaiming her bag. “And—shopping! I thought we’d better stock up before we found ourselves utterly bereft of food. I got your favourites, actually. I could make you dinner tonight?”
The offer hangs in the air. Caitlyn’s face is flushed, but Vi doesn’t question her. There’s no fun in trying to pry out whatever Caitlyn’s hiding; she always gives in too easily.
“Uh-huh,” Vi says.
“Right. Right. I’ll just—sorry to disturb you.”

And when Caitlyn reached out and her fingers stroked Vi’s cheek with the greatest gentleness anyone had ever touched her with, when Vi reached up instinctively and caught her fingers and held them close, something clicked into place. Vi looked up at Caitlyn, and she saw something warm in her eyes, and she couldn’t move, could barely breathe as Caitlyn sat up and leaned over her and brushed her hair back with gentle fingertips and kissed her.

Summary
Cailyn touches Vi’s face with the backs of her fingers and it’s soft, so soft, and Vi closes her eyes to the touch with a small smile, curling her fingers around her hand. Caitlyn wonders when was the last time someone touched her gently like this, with no expectations. Has it ever happened? Or has every touch Vi has felt carried the weight of something behind it? Then Vi opens her eyes again and they’re wide and her face is open and Caitlyn knows something is about to happen, something monumental, and when Vi curls forward and gently presses her mouth against Caitlyn’s, time stands still.
