Caitlyn glanced at Vi again — her best friend of six years — and the guitarist flashed her a chivalrous grin that made her heart stumble against her ribs.
Caitlyn felt her cheeks heat up. She recalled the very first day she stepped into her dorm room and saw that her roommate was a pink-haired guitarist who was also very much a puppy, she’d fallen madly in love and had yet to get back up.
But she and Vi were friends. No more, no less.
And there was no way Caitlyn was risking a six-year friendship over her stupid feelings and her equally stupid heart.

Caitlyn panicked, feeling extraordinarily unprepared having been thrust into her new position without so much as even a handbook to consult. What were the formalities? What was she supposed to respond with? Where was the damn push to talk button…
“Hellooo? I said Houston, do you copy?”
Caitlyn fiddled with her headset, having finally found the green button on the side and hastily letting out a rather breathless reply. “Um, yes. Hello? This is Houston. I copy.”
There was a long pause in which Caitlyn sat twiddling her thumbs, anxiety pushing the frantic pulse of her heartbeat through her eardrums. Was that wrong? Did she already fuck up? She took a steady deep breath, finger hovering over the talk button until the familiar voice of the astronaut came through her headset once more.
“Damn, Houston. I didn’t expect you to sound so sexy.”

It popped open.
“Oh,” Vi said, exhaling sharply, trying again to clear “pretty” out of her mind. “What were you uh…?”
Ekko grinned at her knowingly, “Video games? Unless you’ve got something…or someone better to do?”
Vi glared at him.
Ekko’s eyes widened, “Wait. Seriously? You’re hiding it? Now I have to know.”
Vi sighed. "It’s nobody, Ekko.”
Ekko raised an eyebrow, "If you say so."
Vi grabbed her books with one hand, the other curled into a fist as her classmates' words filtered in.
Yet another reason to count the days 'til she could leave this place.
It was full of rich, homophobic assholes.

“That’s a terrible habit, you know,” a smooth, distinctly British voice said from her left.
Sevika grunted, taking a long drag on her cigarette as she flicked her eyes over to Miss Medarda, pulling the cigarette away from her lips as she blew out a long puff of smoky air, “That so?”
The tall, slender woman shrugged, humming thoughtfully with a slight smile pulling at her lips. She was still shorter than Sevika was - just barely below eye-level in heels, but, still. Tall by any normal standard. Sevika herself was a fucking giant.
“Could I have a drag?”
Sevika raised her eyebrows, not expecting that response, slowly extending her hand out to Mel so she could take the cig, which she did as gracefully as she did everything else, taking a long drag with a contented look on her face.
No coughing.
Interesting.
“I didn’t know you smoked.”
She hummed again, handing the cigarette back in one smooth motion, “I wasn’t aware you knew everything about me.”
Sevika smirked, taking another drag, “Touché, Miss Medarda.”

Summary
Vi shook her head as she scrolled, trying to clear the sting of the loss and the twisting, heated memory of Caitlyn’s form against her rattling around in her brain.
It didn’t work.
It never worked.
Vi still remembered their first fight clearly, even years later.
The image of Caitlyn walking into the ring was still fresh in her mind: the shocking blue of her eyes sparking under the bright lights, her body slender, but muscled, her angular face stoic and focused, her mouth a harsh line across her face.
Vi had been worried she was going to snap her in half.
She scoffed as she remembered just how fucking wrong she’d been.
Caitlyn had wiped the floor with her. She’d had to work for it - a change from her other fights, Vi found out later - but she had.
After that, her training regimen was pretty much exclusively focused on beating Caitlyn.
She hated losing.

Summary
They were out on one of their weekend coffee dates. Caitlyn usually drank the stuff black and probably would rather have it in an I.V. than have to take time out of her busy schedule to drink the damn stuff, but they always made time on the weekends to try a new coffee shop and one of the fancy drinks. Usually they ended up sharing, or swapping.
Vi loved their little tradition, and, as she walked in the little park, her fingers laced with her girlfriend's, all she could think was how lucky she was. Their work was stressful, but she got to be with Caitlyn, and these little domestic moments made Vi think about things like picket fences or whatever the fuck, and a dog, and things she never thought she’d even have the opportunity to want–
“I want your hands all over me,” Caitlyn whispered, breath hot against her ear, and Vi’s body went instantly from relaxed and serene, enjoying a casual walk, to tense and hot as she stopped short, trying to process the words that were shorting out her stupid, gay brain.

After taking a moment to decipher the writing on the bottom of the frame, Caitlyn learned that all the picture was of the winner of the annual surfing competition held in Zaun. The picture was gorgeous. The surfer was perched on his board, expression determined as his fingers stretched out to the side to drag through the wall of a perfect barrel.
Caitlyn felt that same tug she had felt since she was young whenever she saw the ocean, and turned toward the owner of the bike shop,

Caitlyn scrolled on Instagram while she waited for Jayce to grab popcorn.
She sent a cat video to Viktor, liked a few posts about new jobs or house purchases, and was watching a video when a message request notification popped up.
Curious, though not burningly so since it was likely spam, Caitlyn watched the rest of the video before tapping over to the message.
Caitlyn blinked at her screen as she saw the handle.
@ViforViolence was one of Jayce’s gym acquaintances, and not one Caitlyn had ever met.
The thing that was confusing about the DM was that she'd only very recently followed Jayce back on Instagram.
He’d been thrilled earlier in the week when he’d gotten the notification.
It was a sign she was into him, he was sure.
Caitlyn opened the DM, expecting to see some vapid, “will you tell your hot friend I’m free on Saturday?” message, her thumb automatically moving to hover over the “delete” button.
Oh.
Caitlyn’s eyes widened and her thumb froze over the screen.
And then she moved it out of the way to get an unobstructed look at the message.

Caitlyn smiles as memories washed over her like the gentle waves on the lake - sandy feet, the county fair, ice cream smeared on her nose, the warmth of the sunburn that came from days spent lying on the dock.
She looks out the window, watching the midday sun sparkle off a lake that was nearly untouched by the years and the memories.
“Miss?”
“Hmm?” Caitlyn says, turning toward the source of the gentle prompt. “Oh, I’m terribly sorry. I’m afraid I became lost in thought.”
The young woman nods kindly, and Caitlyn’s eyes sparkle as she continues, the expression seeming to smooth the lines on her face, fade the white from her hair. “I especially loved the summer after I turned seventeen. That was a special summer.”

Vi exhaled as she pushed up with her legs, her bodyweight and the loaded bar across her shoulders pushing her down.
She exhaled harder, her legs finally straightening, and then she smiled as she stepped back toward the rack, setting the bar into the cradle.
Fuckin’ sweet.
Not a new PR because she didn't have a spotter, but the weight was moving easy today, and her knee wasn’t bugging her.
Ducking out from under the bar, Vi leaned down to grab her water, taking a swig.
Vi turned back to the squat rack and as she turned, out of the corner of her eye, Vi caught sight of something - someone - and tripped over her water bottle, barely grabbing the bar in time to keep from smashing her face.
Gym Goddess - the cause of her fucking lesbian meltdown - was here again.
She was here every week, usually early in the mornings, and Vi would be lying if she said that she didn’t plan to work out when she knew Gym Goddess would be here.
Vi hadn’t ever talked to her, so she didn’t know if Gym Goddess was into women...but Vi could dream.
