“I know you want me, Vulpes,” Six says, a low murmur. Only for the two of them. Her eyes trace his collar bone, his neck, his sharp jaw. When he meets her eyes, they’re lowered. “I know you were going to ask Caesar if you could keep me before he announced our marriage.”
His face doesn’t change— but she knows it’s true. She saw how he watched her. How carefully he placed the Mark of Caesar on her neck. How his face fell when Caesar announced it at the dam, holding her hand high as he announced victory.

Summary

Miriam abandoned the Legion to seek refuge in the red rock labyrinth of Zion. Tracking her into the heart of enemy territory, Vulpes expects to easily retrieve Caesar's missing asset. A sanctuary overseen by Joshua Graham waits for him instead.
The Legion stands on the brink of a violent transition of power back in Flagstaff. A choice demands his attention as the days pass. Return to the side of a dying ruler, or surrender to the woman who offers a life beyond endless warfare.
