The words struck like a hammer on stone, reverberating in the heavy silence. For a moment, the air seemed to hold its breath. Then came the inevitable shift—dozens of heads turned in unison, necks craning to find her, their eyes sharp with pity, relief, or muted guilt. The crowd parted like water around her, a slow and somber wave of grays and blues, their muted clothing a reflection of their lives. Shoulders hunched, eyes averted, no one dared meet her gaze for long.

Summary
There are many things that can afflict a kingdom— pestilence, famine, war, a princess in a patriarchal line. There are few things worse than the latter.
Pearl had come to understand this from her years of watching her brothers take on responsibilities in the court while she awaited a station that would never be given. She learned quickly that the options for her future were always limited, the moment she was born a woman— Grow old, taking up space in the castle as a spinster, or be married off to whoever her parents needed to placate by the time she came of age. She had made her peace with it, she knew what was expected of her.
But then, why, when war with the neighboring kingdom of Èmerglais came knocking on her door, the only deterrent being her hand in marriage for the Queen's eldest son, did she feel so afraid?
