In the current day, Jokers are people who have renounced or fled their kingdom. Their population has grown enough that the major kingdoms are watching and the Kingdom of Hearts feels as if this is the best time to establish good relations with them.

But one day, the moon vanished.
One brave boy, a child of La Noche, left his people determined to bring the moon back.

“Busy.” The grin receded into a frown.
“Why are we heading home so soon? Principal Sinjer didn’t even ask for my side of the story or anything.”
“He said he didn’t need to,” Gilbert laughed. “You know, I asked him why he decided to suspend you instead of, I don’t know, finding out why you decked a kid, but he said he figured you needed time to adjust.”
“Adjust? To what?”
“Me, kiddo.” Gilbert pulled the car up to their house and shut the car off.
“Why?” Ludwig asked, though he knew full well why. He had enough people giving him grief over it. “You’re-”
“An ex-convict,” Gilbert shrugged. “That’s all that people see. Well, whatever. They aren’t cool enough to hang out with me anyway.”

The smell of smoke and death drifted on the cool summer breeze. The smell was not uncommon to the people of the small village, but it was usually so far away that only the faint wisps could be caught.
Today, the air was thick with the stench of Death’s cooking. The putrid air hung over the village like a blanket, suffocating those trapped inside.
But the villagers weren’t trapped. They knew full well where the smell was coming from, but they weren’t willing to leave their homes to investigate. They thought it best to leave it alone, not out of cruelty, but out of fear.
One old woman wasn’t having it.

Summary
Lovino didn't know what to expect when a letter arrives inviting him to the 'prestigious' World Academy. The school has virtually no information on it what-so-ever, leaving Lovino wary of it's authenticity. He's eventually convinced to go, due to familial issues, and finds out that World Academy was not what the world believed it to be. Souls, wavelengths, demons, and demon weapons? Lovino doesn't know if he can stand it all, especially when he meets his younger brother who he hasn't seen in almost a decade, discovers he has a grandfather that's more than a little crazy, and learns his partner is not happy to see him.
The egotistical maniac has some major problems and in order for both of them to make it through the year, both he and Lovino were going to have to work together. Whether they liked it or not.

One winter night while they were ice skating, two children, Gilbert and Ivan, caused a crack that would change their lives. Gilbert fell through the cracks, succumbing to hypothermia. That day scarred Ivan forever making him afraid of ice skating. Due to the deaths of three other children that year, the town bans most things considered fun or entertaining: skating, sledding, playing in the rain, playing tag in the sun, and other activities like hiking and playing hide and go seek.
Years later, something strange happens. Children say that when they visit the lake during summer, a man in blue who calls himself Jack creates a winter wonderland for children to cool down in. At first Ivan doesn’t believe it and forbids his children from going. One day, one of his daughters visit and comes back to tell him of the man named Jack. Upset, he grounds her and goes to visit this supposed newcomer. He is surprised to see that the man is one who died long ago.
