To his utter bewilderment, Cyno sees his own signature, crisply printed at the bottom. The date was from a month ago.
It seems this suspect is to be charged with forgery, on top of stealing and leyline tampering.

“One scholar’s complaint should not doom an ancient ruin,” Candace says frantically. “The domain is a priceless remnant from King Deshret’s kingdom. It’s a cultural artifact that belongs to the Sands!”
“This domain sits far from any authority that can keep the area safe,” Cyno says.
“It’s far from Sumeru City’s authority, you mean,” Candace retorts.
“It’s far from the Matra’s offices,” Cyno corrects. “It’s the Matra that keeps scholars safe. And it is the Matra that rescues anyone trapped in domains.”

Kaveh goes missing on an expedition to the desert, leading to a tense reunion amongst the desert gang. It’s a headache fueled by conflicting motivations. Aside from finding the missing party, Cyno wants order, Candace wants them gone, Dehya wants everyone to get along–
And Alhaitham just wants Cyno to himself.

Summary
It stares at Alhaitham with familiar, ruby-red eyes.
I’m dreaming again, Alhaitham realizes. He must be, because he’s completely alone in this lake, and it’s come alive with the rhythmic chorus of songbirds and cicadas. Dozens of variegated frogs suddenly surface around the boulder, barely breaking the water’s edge as they watch and wait to see what he’ll do next.
The Jeweled Axolotl blinks twice, then cocks its head.
“Am I supposed to follow you?” Alhaitham asks.
It blinks again, then dips into the water with a gurgle.

Alhaitham finds himself on the wrong side of a conflict to drain an ancient lake. Feeling powerless, he resigns himself to going along with the Akademiya's wishes.
That is, until the lake begins speaking to him in his dreams.

Alhaitham swallows and nods, still taking him in. “You have a new scar.”
Cyno’s jaw clenches. “This injury saved a half-dozen lives. I consider it a badge of honor.”
“I’d hardly call it that,” says Alhaitham in a faint voice.
“What do you care what I call it?” Cyno asks coolly, before pushing past him. He lowers his voice. “Are we not strangers?”

Alhaitham swallows. The divine knowledge capsule flickers with purple light, and his mouth moves of its own accord.
“That’s not true,” he rasps. “The Archon of Gospel has shown me knowledge and reason.”
“Is that the lie they feed you? You’ve been granted wisdom by this… Archon of Gospel,” Cyno scoffs. “If that’s a self-appointed name, your current god lacks taste.”
